Early intervention – helping you cope!

Is your toddler struggling to form their words? Are you having difficulty understanding what they are saying?

Discovering that your child is struggling with communication can be challenging and, at times, overwhelming. You may have noticed that your child is developing slower than their peers, or been informed by your child’s educator or pediatrician that they are having difficulties with their sounds, or that they are frustrated because their peers (and you) can’t understand them.

Navigating the various services available can be overwhelming, and it can be hard to know where to start. Here are some tips on how to find a therapist and access funding:

  • Search for a local therapist: Start by searching for a local speech pathologist in your area using Google, your GP, your child’s paediatrician, or even their daycare centre.

  • Join the waitlist: We strongly recommend joining waitlists as soon as you have concerns about your child’s communication skills. Waiting lists can often be long as the demand for speech therapy continues to increase

  • Access NDIS funding: If you suspect your child has communication difficulties, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can provide financial support. The NDIS funds therapies for children aged 0-6 years, emphasizing early intervention. Zenzability can also refer you to our local partners who can assist with funding eligibility and assessments.

  • Practice self-care: Caring for a child with communication challenges can be stressful. Remember to take care of yourself during this journey. Seek support from friends, family, or support groups. Engage in activities that relax and rejuvenate you, such as exercise, reading, or hobbies. Ensuring your well-being helps you be a better support for your child.

Early intervention funding can make speech therapy more accessible, offering flexibility in the number of sessions and therapy locations. Early intervention is a fantastic tool to support your child’s communication skills.
